UWP app on Xbox

During events and promotions around Windows 10, I always see that UWP applications can run on all Microsoft devices.

To confirm that when I view UWP applications in my browser and I click to see the source code from the application page, I can see the following metadata:

<meta name="description" content="Download this app from Microsoft Store for Windows Phone 10, Windows 10, Surface HUB, HoloLens, other Windows devices, Xbox. See screenshots, read the latest customer reviews, and compare ratings. " />

So why can't I see these apps in my Xbox app store? I read this stackoverflow answer talking about the Xbox SDK, but I don't think so.

Does anyone have more information on deploying generic apps on the Xbox?

UPDATE:

As of March 30, 2016, you can enable your in-store Xbox One console to use Dev mode.

After assembling 2016, I put together a blog post with a video guide (along with my colleague Dave Voiles), step-by-step slide instructions, and a list of interactive links.

Original post:

UWP is currently expected to be available on the Xbox One in 2016.

Below is a snippet from the FAQ ID @Xbox section that mentions the timeline for UWP on the Xbox One and the ability to use trading consoles as development kits. Please note that UWP on the Xbox One is in addition to the current ID @Xbox program through which qualified developers receive up to 2 free kits for approved concepts.

What are the criteria for getting the Xbox One Developer Kits?

Developers with an approved concept for the Xbox One will receive two dev-kits for free. Developers creating universal Windows apps for the Xbox One will be able to test them using retail Xbox Ones starting in the second half of 2015.

Can I use my retail Xbox One as a developer kit?

Not yet. For developers running Universal Windows Apps, you'll be able to test your games on the retail Xbox One sometime after the second half of 2015. UWA sales on the Xbox One will appear in 2016.

FYI, UWA = Universal Windows Applications aka UWP = Universal Windows Platform

In Build 2016, Microsoft announced an app that toggles the retail Xbox One back and forth from developer mode.

You can join the preview program that they set up for this, but you need to unregister from the previous preview program if you had it on the console.

Publishing to the Store is not yet available. Xbox Store should be combined with the Windows Store (there was already a phone store)

Not ready. But this is the plan :) Xbox One has recently been updated to run on Windows 10. The next step is to open a store for Universal Application. There are no announcements to this last post at this time.
