After a recent update (about a month ago), it seems that the Preview panel on the Network tab is completing the rendering of the response as a JSON object. Instead, it gives the answer as a string. This worked as expected before the update.
We are still sending the correct header type as suggested in this question - Chrome (43.0.2357.81) JSON tree in the network preview panel
I also found some suggestions that this was a problem in the past, but hints that it has been fixed? - Google Chrome - Developer Tools - Network Tab - Preview - JSON vs. Text
I sent a message to the Dev Tool Twitter, and also sent a message / error without any additional data. Has anyone fixed this issue for version 45.0.2454.101 (64-bit) or a previous version?
