The venerable Dr. Dobbs Journal is still pretty good. It spans several platforms and mixes some pretty tough technical articles with a lighter tariff (interviews with notes, the column "Developer Diaries", in which the regular developer profiles of Joe (and Jane) from a number of fields). If you work and have the right to spend some non-trivial amount of money on tools (or are ready to declare that you are doing this), you can get them to send them to you for free.

For the Microsoft world, MSDN Magazine is very useful. Some of their speakers are excellent, especially Jeff Richter Side Questions .

Pragmatic Programmers Pragmatic Bookshelf publishes a free journal available online and for download in various formats:

Each month, our editor Michael Swain brings you a free magazine full of interesting articles, features and departments. Download it in PDF, mobi (good for Kindle), and epub (great for Stanza on iPhone).

I also use the magazine Dr. Dobb. But, hey, there is a way to pick it up for free (while writing, one way or another):

http://pages.nxtbook.com/nxtbooks/cmp/ddj <mm> <yy> / offline / cmp_ddj <mm> <yy> _pdf.zip

Replace <mm> and <yy> with the month and year. They are available from 8/2006 to 2/2009.

Then it is known as Dr. Dobb Digest and instead is accessible by URL pattern:

http://i.cmpnet.com/ddj/digest/ <yyyy> / DDD_ <mm> <yy> .pdf

Dr. The Dobbs Journal is a pretty good wide-format magazine for programmers. Cover of all materials.

The game development magazine contains many good articles, although, as you might expect, they tend to tend to C ++.

I like Dr. Dobb Journal , but the magazine links to the reader on its website for most interesting articles. I found the Java Developer Journal very interesting because it contains articles about Java in the context of both web applications and enterprise applications.

For the Perl crowd, there is of course the Perl Overview . And for a German-speaking subset, there is Foo Magazin .

VSJ, I find it a great magnet :) http://www.vsj.co.uk/

Edit

This is not off topic! This is directly related to programming!

I subscribe to the MSDN magazine, it is a little thinner than in previous years, but for .NET it covers many topics, this is a good way to keep abreast of new Microsoft offers.

All content is available online on MSDN, and, of course, online resources / blogs are much more modern, but sometimes it’s nice to have a magazine in your bag for flight or downtime.

Both IEEE and ACM have released some good computer magazines that might be of interest depending on your specific interests. I am a subscriber to both.

The ACM lineup has hardcore content, solid but good. I have not read this after a while.
