I set up an indexing service to index my files, which also include scanned images saved as high resolution TIFF files. I also installed MS Office 2003+ correctly and set up MS Office Document Visualization (MODI), so I can perform OCR on my images and even embed OCR'd text in TIFF.
The indexing service can index and find those TIFFs that were manually OCR'd and re-saved with text data (using the MS Document Imaging tool).
It turns out Data Execution Prevention (DEP), which is deployed with Windows XP SP2, considers MODI to be malicious and refuses to let it do its magic. I was able to get it working by completely disabling DEP, but I found this solution inelegant.
Is there a better solution for this work without disabling DEP?
