There are two answers to this question.
First answer: Yes!
Android Studio as an IDE is absolutely ready for use in production - it is based on IntelliJ IDEA, which is one of the best IDEs that I personally used for production software (I wrote a pretty decent sized Android game with it).
Second answer: No: (
Gradle, and integration into Android Studio, is most likely NOT ready for use in production (if you don't like dealing with various inexplicable problems). Of course, if you are so inclined, then the need to solve these problems is actually not such a big problem. However, for most software products, time is the most valuable resource, and you are likely to spend at least some time on "work in progress", which is equal to AS / Gradle.
Note:
If you are starting a long-term project (i.e. you are going to work, say, at least a year), then switching from AS / gradle is really the best way to move forward, since it will ultimately be the default way for developing Android.
However, if you want to get the best of both worlds (IMHO), go to IntelliJ IDEA and use the old build system, which is very stable. I am currently working on a large production project (in AS, but with Ant build), and besides a few Gradle specific instructions on Google sites (for which there is a lot of alternative information), everything works as expected.
Denial of responsibility:
This opinion, based on my experience using the software, is probably the best thing you are going to get with this question. Besides, if someone else expresses the opposite opinion, then it will be just as fair as mine. Unfortunately, there is no final answer. Hope this helps.
