An unknown version of Tomcat was specified using tomcat-7.0.42

I want to add the latest tomcat-7.0.42 to my eclipse. Perhaps the eclipse tomcat 7 server adapter only supports tomcat version up to 7.0.12 ..

So please help me how can I configure my eclipse using tomcat-7.0.42

You specify the source tomcat directory.

You need to specify the root directory of the tomcat binary installation, also known as CATALINA_HOME.

Usually here you unpack the apache-tomcat-7.0.42.tar.gz file.

This happened to me because Tomcat was still in the process of downloading ( Download and Install ). The message disappeared after a few minutes.

The eclipse window should have a specific progress indicator showing the download status.

For LINUX installation directory for Tomcat 7: / USR / share / tomcat7

Please use this configuration.

To find out the Tomcat installation folder, Eclipse scans the following files:

 conf/catalina.policy conf/server.xml conf/web.xml conf/context.xml conf/tomcat-users.xml conf/catalina.policy conf/catalina.properties lib/catalina.jar

so make sure you specify the right place and have the correct read permissions.

Once you provide the directory where Tomcat needs to be installed and click OK, you may notice that the download and installation are launched on the Eclipse progress tab.

Let the process complete. The error will automatically disappear.

Note. You do not have to specify your CATALINA_HOME folder. I tested this with windows. I cannot say the same for Linux, but the same IMO rule must apply.

Perhaps you are trying to specify the tomcat directory with the source folder. Download the binary version of tomcat from here . For Linux environments, you can find the .zip and .tar.gz files in the main section. Download and extract them. after that, if you specify this extracted directory, eclipse will be able to identify the tomcat version. Eclipse could not find the tomcat version because the directory you specified did not contain the conf folder. Hope this helps!

Just in case ... Apache Tomcat 8.5.X is not compatible with the Apache Tomcat 8.0 server selection in eclipse. And he gives this error.

Go to "Window -> Settings -> Server -> Runtime Environments"

Delete existing servers that they may not have fully loaded.

Add new server

For Windows users

Use the Tomcat Service installer from the Apache tomcat download page. You will receive a .exe file. which installs a service for windows. Usually he will install Apache tomcat in "C: \ Program Files \ Apache Software Foundation \ Tomcat 8.0" and is easy to recognize in an eclipse.

I got the same error and solved it by providing enough access rights to the folder. I gave full permissions (you can try limited permissions, which are enough to eclipse to start tomcat)

 sudo chmod -R 777 apache-tomcat-8.5.33/

For your information, I encountered this error on my Mac, but I think it should be the same for the Ubuntu system.

You are pointing to the source directory. You can start the build by running ant from the same directory, and then add '\ output \ build' to the end of the installation directory path.

After installing Tomcat with Brew, the solution for me was:

 sudo chmod -R 777 /usr/local/Cellar/tomcat/<your_version>

I am on macOS and installed tomcat using homebrew, the next way fixed my problem

 /usr/local/Cellar/tomcat/9.0.14/libexec

it also gives me the same error that brought me here.

However, I just waited a while, and it installed without any action.

hope this helps
