Installing EGit under Eclipse Luna (4.4.1)

Installing EGit under Eclipse seems like a moving target. All the instructions that I saw differ in some way, and at the moment I do not know how to proceed with the installation of EGit.

Where to begin?

What are the required steps?

First check if your Eclipse distribution already contains EGit or not. If so, you will have the Team / Git page in the settings.

If not, you can do one of the following:

  • Install it from the Eclipse Marketplace: http://marketplace.eclipse.org/content/egit-git-team-provider - just drag and drop the installation link onto your eclipse instance.
  • Open the dialog box for installing new software using the help / installing new software, find the Luna update site (annual release repository already added to the list of update sites) and find the EGit functions (available in the Collaboration category).
  • Follow the instructions on the EGit homepage: https://www.eclipse.org/egit/download/
