According to the latest Compatibility Definition Document, defining a screen configuration requires that:

  • Screens MUST be at least 2.5 inches in size of the physical diagonal.
  • Density must be at least 100 dpi
  • The aspect ratio MUST be between 1.333 (4: 3) and 1.779 (16: 9).
  • Display technology used consists of square pixels

In practical terms, the lowest screen resolution currently is QVGA (240x320). There are several phones that use this resolution, including HTC Tattoo and Wildfire. The smallest device I know of is the 2.55 "QVGA Sony Ericsson X10 Mini .

See Multi-Screen Support to see all possible screen resolutions and “Screen Size and Density” to see what the current Android market looks like in terms of both dimensions.

Right now, the “Small Screen with Low Density” has the expected resolution of 240x320, so you can think of it as the minimum screen resolution at the moment (until Google updates these numbers).

The smallest screen is probably the 2.8-inch HTC Tattoo. The resolution of this screen is QVGA (240 × 320, low density, small screen).

If you need more information about the available Android phones, definitely check

The current minimum values for Android compatibility have not changed from those indicated in the accepted answer. The minimum size for the latest versions of Android is 426x320, with the exception of devices defined as watches, which must have at least 120 dpi and a diagonal of at least 1.1 inches. Since the clock is allowed to be square (no other devices), this means that the minimum allowable clock resolution is 1.1 / sqrt2 * 120 = 93x93. Actually, this probably will not work, since I doubt that the user interface of the system will function in this size.

The smallest screen now applies to Android Watch (1.1 to 2.5 inches). See Section “2.4 Viewing Requirements”.
