Is there an open source javascript based pdf tool available? Any tutorial on developing this kind of script that displays PDFs would be helpful.
There are some guys at Mozilla who are working on implementing a PDF reader using HTML5 and JavaScript. It is called pdf.js , and one of the developers just made an interesting blog post about the project.
There is an open source HTML5 / javascript reader available under the name Trapeze, although it is still in its early stages.

You can use the Google Docs widget to view PDF files if you don't mind if they have a host for the application itself.

Well, it's not even close to the full specification, but there is JavaScript and PDF-based Canvas there.
