GitHub asks me to “add a new helper” every time I open it

Each time I open GitHub for Mac, it asks me to “add a new helper tool” and asks for my password. Each time I entered my password (I am the administrator on this computer), but after that I do not see any noticeable changes, and the invitation is returned every time I open GitHub again. (See the attached photo for the help window.)

I am running OSX Yosemite version 10.10 on a Mac Mac at the end of 2006 (2.5 GHz Intel Core i5).

Not sure if this is related, but I am launching the GitHub version "Jet BBQ (186)". According to the GitHub release notes for Mac , this is NOT the latest version, but when I select "Check for Updates," it says that I have the latest version. Can a new version of GitHub solve this problem? This is more unpleasant and does not interfere with my work.

I use GitHub daily for Xcode, pushes with my colleagues. They all use MacBook Airs and OSX Yosemite, but don't have the same problem as me.

The only solution I have found so far was to uninstall the GitHub application for Mac. Then I reloaded the application (the latest version 193 is “Big Feels”).

He then gave me a pop-up message stating that I need to uninstall the old version, since OSX now comes with default Git commands (or something like that?). By clicking "Uninstall Now," the application crashed, so I had to select "Uninstall later." This is just a fix for the symptom, as GitHub could keep telling me to delete it every time I open it, but at least it says I have the latest version.

I also had this problem.

Cause? GitHub.app been confused by several git installations: GitHub.app command line tools and a copy of Homebrew (newer version and completion of bash).

Running the git credential-osxkeychain shell command git credential-osxkeychain returned the string "use", so despite this message, an assistant was installed.

Bugfix: Downloading and launching GitHub Desktop was successfully installed by its assistant. I think GitHub Desktop.app is the new name for GitHub.app , so they apparently fixed the error.

BTW: They wrote, "If you use GitHub for Mac or Windows, the update is automatic.", But their automatic update did not fix this problem and did not switch to "GitHub Desktop.app".

Use AppCleaner and uninstall it. Reinstall.
