Is there a way to access the Apple Watch’s heart rate sensor?

As Apple prepares the watch as a device for health, is it possible for developers to get a heart rate? I have not seen the documentation for the heart rate sensor. I'm not sure how they plan third-party applications to do a lot without this main piece of data.

Not. Direct access to Apple Watch sensors (which includes a heart rate monitor) is not possible.
