Apache starts unexpectedly after changing a document in httpd.conf

I am currently following this toturial to try using the folder in Dropbox as the htdocs folder. When I change these lines:

DocumentRoot "C:/xampp/htdocs" <Directory "C:/xampp/htdocs">

to

 DocumentRoot "C:/Users/Håvard/Dropbox/web" <Directory "C:/Users/Håvard/Dropbox/web">

I get the following error:

 19:39:52 [Apache] Error: Apache shutdown unexpectedly. 19:39:52 [Apache] This may be due to a blocked port, missing dependencies, 19:39:52 [Apache] improper privileges, a crash, or a shutdown by another method. 19:39:52 [Apache] Press the Logs button to view error logs and check 19:39:52 [Apache] the Windows Event Viewer for more clues 19:39:52 [Apache] If you need more help, copy and post this 19:39:52 [Apache] entire log window on the forums

I got this error earlier than Skype using the same ports, but this time it is not. I really believe that this has something to do with the letter “å” in my “Håvard” - username ... I tried to change the path to something without my username, and it works.

Does anyone know if the letter has anything to do with the completion of work, and if: is there any solution?

I found a solution to the problem. This was the encoding of the httpd.conf file. Here is what I did (I think there are several ways to do this):

  • Open httpd.conf in Notepad ++
  • Change Notepad ++ Settings in the New Document Section to UTF-8
  • Create a new document
  • Copy and paste everything from httpd.conf into the new documentation
  • Save and overwrite as httpd.conf

This answers my question, but it did not solve my general problem of Norwegian writing causing problems with my xampp installation. Here is the next problem that I am facing.

Right-click on the Dropbox folder and select properties. Then select the security tab (Sikkerhet in Norwegian). Click on your username. There you can find out if the user has read and write permissions.

Verify that your new directory has all permissions. There seems to be a read and write permission issue
