How to replace a standard verizon fios router with a third-party router?

How to configure a third-party (Linksys) router to replace the verizon fios router on your network?

I recently bought a Linksys WRT1900AC router to update the network in my home with Verizon Fios.

(Many people ask why .. suffice it to say, because I believe that the WRT1900AC illuminates the house better, has AC (only with N) and has a USB port and eSata port for the network area of the Storage Device.)

This setting works for approximately 95% (everything except the mobile application). This has not been verified with verizon voip phones.

3 major changes that must occur:

  • Change FIOS ONT Box to output CoAX and Ethernet
  • Update ONT Modem to Receive New Wireless Router
  • Open TCP port 4567 to enable Channel Guide

Guide:

How to change FIOS ONT Box for CoAX and Ethernet output?

  • Contact Verizon Customer Support.
  • Ask politely to enable the Ethernet port in the ONT field. (Using online chat is less than 10 minutes.)

At this point, we need to configure the Linksys router (or another third-party router).

  • Connect it to the Verizon FIOS router in an open Ethernet port.
  • Follow the installation instructions.
  • Could not find Linksys WRT1900AC. Tell it to go on.
  • Manually set the Internet connection to "Automatic DHCP". (If you need to get the address from the fios router.)
  • Linksys router should provide Internet access in the new Wi-Fi network.
  • (optional) Convert all devices to a new wireless network

Update ONT Modem to Receive New Wireless Router

  • Contact Verizon Customer Support.
  • Request them, let the new Wirless Router connect the ONT modem.
  • Technology (most likely 2nd level) may, however, you will need to call you back as your Internet goes out.
  • Technology will ask you to connect your Linksys router to the ONT window. (Your chat will end)
  • Technology issues a command and you have internet on your Linksys router

At this point, the Internet and Fios TV will still work, but the channel guide will not be searchable, and services on demand will not work.

Get search on channel and on demand.

  • Plug the Verizon Fios Actiontec router into the Ethernet port of your Linksys router (opposite the setup, what we started).
  • Connect the computer directly to the actiontec router (Ethernet cable).
  • (Optional) Turn off Wi-Fi.
  • Get the IP address of the Verizon FIOS Actiontec Router.
  • Connect to a Linksys router.
  • Add a firewall rule to open TCP port 4567 for the ActionTec router. (Multimedia Over CoAxial (MoCA) requires this port to be open.)

Notes

I was unable to launch the Verizon FIOS mobile app again. It appears that Set Top Box (STB) is hardcoded to search for Verizon FIOS default Wi-Fi settings.

I said 95% above that I’m crashed on how I use the services:

  • 80% = Internet and FIOS TV are still working
  • 15% = Channel search and search by query
  • 5% = Verizon FIOS mobile app

Useful sources I found:

I could not find any other comprehensive resources to help me with this, so I wrote it here. We apologize if this is not entirely suitable for this StackExchange site, however I thought that knowledge was very important for sharing.

When using Frontier Fios, following the instructions similar to “Get a channel guide ...”, everything works, including a channel guide, “On Demand” and “Mobile App”.

The mobile application did not work at first, but then I restarted my set-top boxes (DVR and a small non-dvr box), and the mobile application started working. I use Google Wi-Fi and the 192.168.86.xxx subnet, and as soon as I saw that an IP address was assigned to the top box, I knew that I had to keep trying until it worked.
