The cleanest way to do this is described in Apple's official documentation in Publishing Testing Applications . Below are the exact instructions given to you on this page:
The iTunes image that your testers see should be your application icon. This artwork should be 512 x 512 JPEG or PNG file named iTunesArtwork . Please note that the file must not have the extension .
After creating your application icon file, follow these steps to add it to the application:
- Open the project in Xcode.
- In the Groups and Files list, select the Resources group.
- Choose Project> Add To Project, go to the iTunesArtwork file and click Add.
- In the dialog that appears, select the "Copy items" option and click "Add."
Note that a PNG or JPEG file is simply “iTunesArtwork” without a suffix.
If you try to copy the file to the application package after creating it, it will break the subscription to the application and you will receive an error when trying to synchronize with your device. Ensure that the artwork file is included in the “Copy Resources” folder as part of the project’s target in Xcode (step 4 above).
