Android Wear, connect to a Bluetooth device

I want to connect a third-party bluetooth device to my Android Wear watch (Samsung Gear Live). I'm trying to find documentation on how to do this, but I'm out of luck. All the search queries that I seem to think I want to connect to the phone.

Does anyone know a good example that shows how to connect, for example, a Bluetooth heart rate monitor (or other device) to Android Wear so that I can save a history when the phone is not there? Is it possible? Will there be the same protocols as doing this from a phone / tablet?

Unable to connect third-party bluetooth devices to the Android Wear watch that you are describing. You will need to connect the heart rate monitor to the phone, extract the necessary data, and then use the data level API to send data to wearable for display to the user.

EDIT: Android Wear devices now support connectivity with Bluetooth devices.

@Ryan Tensmeyer, I think @Wayne Pieksarki's answer is now deprecated. I was able to create and run a standalone application that used BLE to connect to a third-party Bluetooth device, namely a wireless thermometer. I used a library called SweetBlue and tested the standalone app on Android Wear Moto 360. It worked great - I don’t need a phone!
