I am using Eclipse / StatET. However, there is a new FLOSS IDE released today that looks interesting, called RStudio . It even supports Sweave, so when it gets more polished I can switch. User input seemed a bit sluggish when I played with it earlier today.

Update

They actively update RStudio every month or two. Months have passed since I came across a small mistake. And the added features are really useful - support for seamless packages and support for native Git are those that come to mind.

This is ultimately a very subjective question and will depend on your OS, etc.

I prefer Eclipse (StatET) because I use it for all my developments and has many rich features (for example, SVN integration, Sweave / Latex integration, project management). If you use Emacs, ESS works fine. It clearly depends on what you like.

I used to use Tinn-R, but in the end I prefer to have one IDE for everything, and Eclipse has a much wider general acceptance.

I am using Eclipse with the StatET plugin.

Pros:

  • Supports everything you expect (syntax highlighting, code folding, etc.), but also has good parts of the R interaction.

  • You get all the Eclipse bells. For example, we use SVN with our R code, and the Subclipse plugin is awesome.

Minuses:

  • Eclipse is a beast.

My preferred tool on all platforms is ESS for Emacs.

I have been using TINN-R for several years and was very pleased with this. It allows you to select parts of your code and click to send it to the interpreter, or send one line at a time or the entire file.

I really use Textmate and enjoy it quite a bit. But I would not recommend using Textmate for R, however, if you are already using Textmate, this is fantastic.

I use Jedit along with the Romain Francios editing mode for R ( http://romainfrancois.blog.free.fr/index.php?post/2009/03/16/A-better-jedit-edit-mode-for-R ) .

I am not very familiar with R-Project, but I use PSPad .

It allows you to organize your (text) files in a project style.
