Where is the project stored in Eclipse?

Project Explorer can list all projects in Eclipse. I wonder where the project information is stored?

Projects can be found in the .metadata directory of your workspace:

[eclipse-workspace]/.metadata/.plugins/org.eclipse.core.resources/.projects

Each project contains a .location file (in binary format), which supposedly tells eclipse where the project is on the file system if it was imported.

By default, projects in Eclipse are stored in your workspace. You are asked where your workspace is created or which one opens when you open Eclipse, but you can configure it to not ask you again.

If you configured Eclipse not to request again, you can go to General → Startup and Shutdown → Workspaces in your settings and check the "Request workspace at startup".

This page also lists your recently used workspaces (perhaps only one entry if you have never explicitly specified another).

Please note that you can also create projects located outside the workspace by explicitly specifying a separate location for each project.

Go to the workspace folder. You will see a folder for each project.

(Do not know where your workspace folder is? Try File → Switch workspace ... and it will give you the path.)

On Windows, usually C:\Users\%USERNAME%\workspace

Where %USERNAME% is the username provided to your computer. eg. john

You can paste the above path into the Run window ( Windows + R ) and it will automatically select a username for you.

For Eclipse Kepler SR2 on Windows 7

The easiest way to get general information about the project (for example, its location), see below:

  • Go to the "Package Explorer" view;
  • right-click on the top-level folder of the project hierarchy;
  • select "Show in" → "Properties";

and you will get a list of properties for this project in the "Properties". The project location will be there.

On a Windows PC, you can find your projects under C:\Users\yourname\workspace\ . If you are on Linux, it should be under /home/yourname/workspace/ .

I used the sentence "Try File -> Switch workspace" which works, but also reinstalled Eclipse 0_0
