How big should the Action Bar (Toolbar) icons in the new Android Material design be?

I tried looking for design recommendations, but I couldn't find anything like it. I am trying to determine the optimal size of the action bar icons in the new version of L. Here is an example of what I'm trying to achieve:

I tried the previous 48dp size, but it looks a lot bigger than the ones in this image.

From Keylines Touch Target Size Material Design, 24dp Icon 24dp

The full icon size should be 24dp with a 24dp live area. See this answer: stack overflow
