SQL Server Express cannot connect to error: 28 - Server does not support the requested protocol

I can’t connect to the local SQL Server Express (2012, but the version should not matter) from my server (Windows 2008 R2) to use the tool on it (APEX SQL Data Diff, if you're interested). I can browse the network servers well and select my local instance from the drop-down list of available servers, but when I go to the search queries on the server, this time expires with this error message (the same applies to SSMS).

When connecting to SQL Server, a network-related or specific instance error occurred. The server was not found or was unavailable. Verify that the instance name is correct and SQL Server is configured for a remote connection. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 28 - Server does not support strong text requested protocol) (Microsoft SQL Server, error: -1)

I turned on the firewall - it's not him.

I allowed remote connections - it's not him.

The SQL Server Browser service is turned on and went through the firewall - it's not him.

I can connect perfectly with the same TO tools on the server, but the FROM server is not working.

Any ideas?

Thanks for this article for getting an error message somewhere. The problem is that the required network protocols are disabled by default in SQL Server Express. I had to log into Sql Server Configuration Manager locally and enable Named Pipes and TCP / IP. After that, you need to restart the SQL Server browser and SQL Server services (instance).

SQL Server Config manager

Although I don’t need this, you may also need to check in the “SQL Server Network Configuration” in the “Protocols” section the settings that you need to adjust there.

Hope this helps someone else!

SQL Configuration Manager:

SQL Configuration Manager

The wrong group was selected in the link bar: it should be SQL Server Network Configuration → Protocols for SQLEXPRESS .

Remember to also check under "SQL Server Network Configuration" -> Protocols for YourInstance . I was a boob and forgot to look there too.
