Updating XCODE Using Another Apple Account

I have MAC OS 10.7.3. xcode 4.3.1 installed using a different apple id since my macbook pro was previously used by my friend. Now when I try to upgrade Xcode to 4.3.2, it asks for credentials for my friends account. Unfortunately, the Apple App Store explicitly states that you can update the application using the account that was used to install the application.

How can I update Xcode using my credentials?

Thanks in advance.

Unfortunately, I had to answer my own question, Simple answer: NO, you cannot update xcode installed from another account. The solution is to remove the existing installation and reinstall it from the new account. To remove an existing installation, you need to remove it from the launchpad. You can do this by setting the xcode icon in the start panel, and long press on the icon until it starts to dance. Then delete it and wait a while until xcode.app is removed from / Application. If you manually remove xcode.app from / Application, the application store will continue to consider it installed and will not allow you to reinstall in the future.

The above solution assumes that you installed xcode from the Mac app store, usually versions later than 4.2. For earlier versions, simply delete the / Application / xcode folder.

I'm sure you would solve it now, but just put a solution here that worked for me.

  • Open Finder and go to Applications,
  • Ctrl + Press the application and select "Show Package Contents" (in this case Xcode),
  • Expand the "Contents" directory and select the _MASReceipt directory to select it, enter the command "Ctrl + Delete" delete the directory forever - you will be prompted for credentials, as this is a protected file.
  • Exit and restart the AppStore, then find the application. Now you can update your new identifier without deleting the old version of the application.

Hope this helps someone understand that it took me a while to understand!

Solution found:

I had this error related to Spotlight. The App Store uses Spotlight in some way. My fix was to add all HD to the Privacy tab in the Prefs Spotlight System panel, close the prefs and wait 30 seconds, reopen and remove your HD from the Privacy tab. Spolight begins reindexing. The application store has been restored and the problem has been fixed! Spending it here for others who might be looking for later. Also filed a bug report with Apple.
