Using FUSLOGVW.EXE on a computer without Visual Studio installed

I am currently having problems binding the assembly on our development server. I want to investigate the problem a little further using the Fusion Log Viewer. Since there is no Visual Studio on the computer, I copied FUSLOGVW.EXE to a local folder and started there.

Is it supposed to work or does he need something else? I have no impression that the application logs any crashes (and yes, I have the correct settings).

Fuslogvw is not logging in. The alloy loader does this. Fuslogvw only displays log output. Do you get any logs in the source directory that you configured?

Oh, and it should work on a machine on which Visual Studio is not installed.

Doing the above did not help me.

Instead, I recommend doing the following:

In: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Fusion

Add

  • ForceLog is 1 (DWORD)
  • LogFailures sets the value to 1 (DWORD)
  • LogResourceBinds is set to 1 (DWORD)
  • The value of the LogPath (String) parameter for the log folder, i.e.) C: \ FusionLog \

Very simple .. and it worked for me! I am using Windows 2012 R2.

As mentioned in the answer above and in the comments, you need to do two things to start the merge log on a machine without Visual Studio:

  • Copy fuslogvw.exe to this computer. You can find it where you installed .NET (for example, C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SDKs\Windows\v8.1A\bin\NETFX 4.5.1 Tools\x64\FUSLOGVW.exe )
  • Copy flogvwrc.dll to the same location as fuslogvw.exe on this computer. You can find it in subdirectory 1033 where fuslogvw.exe was (for example, C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SDKs\Windows\v8.1A\bin\NETFX 4.5.1 Tools\x64\1033\flogvwrc.dll )

Once you have fuslogvw.exe and flogvwrc.dll together in the same directory, you can run the log viewer. You do not need registry changes or any other changes.

You also need to create a LogFailures key in HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Fusion with a DWORD value of 1 to enable the log. You must set this value to 0 if you are not testing, otherwise it will continue to fill the log. Create a folder, for example. C:\fuslog and refer to it in the "User Log" window in the "Settings" section of the "View Binding Log" window.

You may be using the wrong version of fuslogvw. check c: \ program files \ microsoft SDK or c: \ program files \ Microsoft.net \ SDK for another version of the utility.

it is important that you turn HKLM \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Fusion to 0 because it makes your visual studio and other things so slow, simply because it takes time to log when hundreds of files open. I saw entries and log files for programs that I never asked for a log!

Here I give you an example of what happens with time; I did not know that fusion / fuslogvw logs all kinds of events. This must be done clean when starting up the tools so that it continues to register and slow down the system, mainly if VS launches very large projects. I am grateful for this information on how to disable it. I will use it again when I need it, because it is a great tool. But in this regard, it is simply stupid. Josef
