Where is the "test output panel" located?

An unexpected error was detected. See the test output area for more details.

Where is the "test output area"? I can not find it anywhere in Visual Studio. I found a "test conductor", but it does not give any details.

The combobox "show output from" appears in the output window. Select Tests as shown here.

In fact, the message should be

An unexpected error was detected. For more information on the Output Window see Show output from: and select the Tests drop-down list.

For it is in the output window, which is the same window that basically displays Build text information, but can also display information about test results.

If you are looking for an actual problem, for me it was:

vstest.discoveryengine.exe and vstest.executionengine.exe

Open Task Manager, go to the Processes tab, right-click and end the process. Restart Visual Studio.
