How to open new doc tab shortcuts on the right side of Visual Studio?

When I open a new document, a tab label is displayed on the left side of the panel. How can I do this on the right?

To tell Visual Studio that new tabs are open to the right of existing tabs:

  • Click "Tools" and select "Options."
  • In the Environment heading, in the list on the left, click the Documents tab.
  • Check the box next to "Insert documents to the right of existing tabs."

For Visual Studio 2012, 2013 and later, this option has moved to the Tabs and Windows section.

Updated directions:

  • Click "Tools" and select "Options."
  • In the "Environment" heading in the list on the left, click the "Tabs and Windows" button.
  • Check the box next to "Insert new tabs to the right of existing tabs." This should be the first check box in the "Well Well" tab section.
