Internet Explorer 6 emulator recommendation

What good tool can I recommend for emulating Internet Explorer 6? I would not have to go and install an old copy of Windows XP somewhere.

Microsoft Expression Web SuperPreview (which is now part of Microsoft Expression Web 3 ) has the ability to show you how the page will display in Internet Explorer 6, it also has some interesting features for overlaying Internet Explorer 7 rendering or images so you can see where these 1 pixel inconsistencies encountered.

If you are using Windows, you can install MultipleIE. This will allow you to run IE6 as standalone.

I recently discovered that you can do this pretty well in Windows 7 using Windows XP mode. You need to install two virtual hard disks, but then you can create shortcuts on the Windows 7 desktop to β€œopen” Internet Explorer 6. There will be a good step-by-step guide on how to do this here:

netrenderer is

  • is free
  • very fast (no wait time at all)
  • platform independent and
  • universal (IE5.5 - IE10)

which does not require any local installation. My definite choice after trying out more than a few alternatives.

In Windows 7, you can download XP Mode , in which you get a fully licensed version of XP. It integrates perfectly with windows 7, and it never expires like free VPC images.

People usually use VMWare or another virtualization tool to do this. At least where I work :)
