Background: I am a high-tech computer science teacher. My students use Citrix as a means of sharing internal files. To access files, they must be logged in using the Citrix Receiver. The account used to log in is created in AD and is a member of their computer assigned to the Citrix group (i.e., STUDENTS_5_CLASS_STAFF_GG). Once added to this group, they will have access to specific folders in CitrixDocs. Problem. When accessing files in CitrixDocs (for example, Excel spreadsheets), students must use the version of Office (2003) installed on Citrix Server (SLSCLASS1). This causes compatibility issues when opening in 2016 and is re-saved with a different extension as the source file (see below). Files also open as (read-only); they should save the file as a different file name and delete the older version.
Office 2003 - File extension: .xls
Office 2016 - File extension: .xlsx
Macro - file extension: .xlsm
Temporary solution. Have students copy the file (in question) to their local Citrix folder and open it using their version of Office. Then they can save the file and move it back. As you can imagine, this is a cumbersome process. I need to find a long-term solution for sharing files and distributing documents from the classroom to all students. Right now I am leaning towards the simple creation of vpn tunnels from students to the classroom. I would like to open this up for discussion. thank you
